New WinE

Discipleship Year 2020/21

What is it?

The New Wine Discipleship Year (NWDY) is an opportunity for anyone aged 18-24 to grow in love for God as a follower of Jesus, develop their gifts and search out His calling through a combination of getting stuck into ministry in a local church and learning more about God and His Word.

It’s particularly aimed at those looking to:

  • Grow confidence in who God has made you to be

  • Discover the purpose he has for your life

  • Get involved by serving in a local church

  • Discover, exercise and nurture the gifts and passions God has given you

  • Be challenged to step out, risk and see God work through you

We’re offering placements here at St Peter’s and St James church (SPSJ), an evangelical Anglican church in Hereford. We are two buildings, yet one church and one parish in the city centre, in an exciting time of seeking where God might be calling us in the future.

What does it involve?

The NYDY would begin in September 2020, and includes the following components:

Placement at St Peter and St James

Everyone on the NWDY nationwide is placed at a local church, for a minimum of 12 hours a week, including Sundays, in an area of ministry that interests you. Placements at St Peter’s and St James will include choosing an area you’re particularly passionate about to focus on:

  • Worship leading

    • (Working as part of the worship team to help passionately lead us in sung worship)

  • Youth & Student ministry

    • (Developing youth outreach, links with the upcoming university in Hereford, and sixth form students, and the Close House youth drop-in centre)

  • Children’s and Families ministry

    • (Groups on Sundays, monthly Messy Church, holiday club in summer, going into our two primary schools for Open the Book)

  • Social media, Video and Podcasts

    • (Working on online outreach to the wider community in Hereford by creating videos, podcasts and engaging Facebook/Twitter/Instagram posts)

You’ll also get involved with our “Access” 11-18 youth group.

Our curate, Elliot Swattridge, will be your main supervisor, working under the guidance of our vicar, Andy Morgan. They’re looking to encourage, support and invest in you in growing in areas you feel God is calling you as you serve God here at SPSJ.

Teaching at Trinity Cheltenham

Teaching is weekly at Trinity Cheltenham on Mondays, 8 hours a week, another exciting church where you’ll get to learn alongside other NWDY students. Core New Wine teaching includes modules on Jesus, the Bible, the Kingdom of God, mission and evangelism, leadership and character development. This also includes live stream lectures from the St Mellitus BA course in Theology. This course is non-assessed (with no essays required).

We don't want accommodation to be an issue, so if you are interested in joining us for the year but concerned about this then please do contact us. There is, for instance, the possibility of staying in a room in the home of one of our church members.

Fees are £1000 per person, payable at the beginning of the course, which covers the tuition fee cost of the weekly teaching sessions. However, if this is a significant obstacle, please still get in touch and let us know and we shall try as far as possible to accommodate your individual situation, as we don't want anyone to be excluded from this.

We encourage NWDY students also to take on a part-time job in Hereford, which, as well as helping with living expenses, also helps engage and create vital links with the local community.

Do I need any experience or qualifications?

We don’t require any prior experience or qualifications - people come to NWDY at a wide range of different levels of education and experience - just come as you are! What we are really looking for is people who are passionate about Jesus Christ, passionate about getting involved in seeing His kingdom come in Hereford, by enthusiastically seeking Him in all the areas you’ll be involved with here.
